Gursky—2020

Gursky—2020 is an artist’s book published on the occasion of Andreas Gursky’s highly personal retrospective exhibitions in Germany at the Museum der bildenden Künste, Leipzig, and the Museum Küppersmühle für Moderne Kunst, Duisburg. The bilingual (English/German) publication features more than fifty photographs by the artist, dating from 1984 to 2020, alongside previously unpublished photographs and personal snapshots, mostly taken with a mobile phone, which reveal Gursky’s approach to the medium. Selected quotations from Robert Musil’s novel The Man Without Qualities (1930) are interspersed between the plates, and works by Gursky’s father and grandfather are included to illustrate the long photographic tradition in his family and draw reference to Leipzig, the city where he was born.
