Andy Warhol: B&W Paintings: Ads and Illustrations 1985–1986

This book was published on the occasion of the two-part exhibition Andy Warhol: B&W Paintings: Ads and Illustrations 1985–1986 at Gagosian, 555 West 24th Street, New York, and Heddon Street, London. In these bold black-and white images, some of which were first exhibited at Gagosian on Wooster Street, New York, in 1992, five years after the artist’s death, Warhol interprets images and texts from newspaper and magazine articles and advertisements, offering a characteristically pithy reflection on life in contemporary America.

The catalogue reproduces a selection of the titular works—most of which were painted in synthetic polymer and silkscreen ink on canvas—alongside source material taken from popular print media. It also includes an introduction by Andy Warhol Foundation cofounder Vincent Fremont and an interview with Warhol conducted and introduced by art historian Benjamin H. D. Buchloh, an edited version of which originally appeared in October magazine in 1994.
